Burrowed by Maressa Mortimer

It is a great pleasure to be part of the tour for the new book by Maressa Mortimer. Burrowed is a stand alone book, suitable for children 12 and over or young adults.

The Blurb

The beautiful island of Ximiu has a plan for a more sustainable future. But not everyone living on the island is on board. Jasira, daughter of the governing matriarch, is determined to uncover the dark forces threatening her home. With the help of her friends she embarks on a desperate bid to save her island community. When the price is higher than she had bargained for, will Jasira still find faith and beauty in the world around her?

The Review

This is a gripping book for older children and young adults. The story is exciting and the characters well drawn.

I found it helpful to have the list of main characters at the front of the book because the names were unusual and I was able to flick back to confirm who was who. The map was also useful to help me visualise the island, of Ximiu, where the adveture takes place.

The main character, Jasira is joined on her adventure by her friend, Ilori, who shares his poetry to explain his thoughts. It is a lovely touch. He is wheelchair bound. I liked this detail and found it most inclusive. Jasira also tells the background to the story through the clever device of writing letters to another friend, Xandra. This is a clever way of dealing with the background without slowing the story down.

I enjoyed this book very much and have no hesitation recommending it.

The Author

I grew up in the Netherlands, and moved to England soon after finishing my teaching training college. Married to Pastor Richard Mortimer we live in a Cotswold village with our four children. I'm a homeschool mum, enjoying the time spent with the family, travelling, reading and turning life into stories. I want to use my stories to show practical Christian living in a fallen world.
