I try to write something every day, but sometimes idea run dry and I find it difficult to come up with a topic or theme for my piece. it's different when I'm writing a book or have another specific writing project I'm working on. In those circumstances topics, themes and even the style of writing will be preordained. However, if I have a few days off, I often use prompts to get my creative juices going. So what use are writing prompts?

1) Writing prompts are useful to give you ideas no matter what kind of writing you are doing. It might be fiction, non-fiction poetry or prose, but you may just get a little nudge that will get the words flowing.
2) You may also find prompts useful if you are suffering from writers' block. It can be debilitating if you can't settle to get words on the page and using writing prompts can alleviate the problem.
3) Another use for writing prompts is to tackle unfamiliar topics and take you out of your comfort zone. This is an excellent way to stretch your vocabulary and change your writing style to fit the random topic.
4) A good prompt will also ignite your creativity and spark the creation of characters and stories that are out of your normal sphere of reference.

Here are a selection of prompts that may be useful - if not today, then the next time you need a writing nudge:
1) Write about a character who has to depend on the kindness of strangers.
2) Write about your favourite piece of furniture in your home.
3) Write a poem that starts with the words - 'At least'.
4) Write about what you can see out of your window now.
5) Write about a character who finds a message in a bottle that takes them on a long journey.
6) Write about an unexpected meeting between two characters who have not met for years.
7) Write about the funniest thing that's ever happened to you.
8) Write a story from the perspective of a mythical beast.
9) Write about a day that completely changes your character's life.
10) Write a poem entitled 'Echoes in the Forest'.
