Fall in Love on Glasgow’s Gritty Streets by Shana Frost

Shana is one of the authors attending Authors Invade Glasgow at the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel in Clydebank near Glasgow on 27th June 2026, so I am delighted that she has agreed to share with us today her thoughts on Scotland's largest city and her books set there. Thank you for inviting me to your blog today, Val. As you know, Glasgow is not a ‘romantic’ city. It lends itself better to superhero movies and murder mysteries. And yet, when it comes to my romantic suspense novels, I chose Glasgow. Why?
If there was ever a city that embodied its slogan to a T, it would be this one. It’s in the smiles and frowns, the bams on the street, and the cluster of pals out on the town. The longer I call this city my home, the more I want to share it with people.
So back in 2022, when I was writing a romantic thriller featuring an immigrant protagonist, I set the novel in Glasgow. My FMC’s life story mirrored mine, so why not complete the similarities by having her adopt Glasgow as her home?
Dreich is how I would describe the Scottish weather. It’s cold, windy and rainy. It’s the perfect atmosphere to have your two reluctant lovers hunker down in the same flat together, and it’s the perfect weather to wipe away any traces of evidence.
All my romances include just two people in the relationship. But Glasgow is like the third witness to the love and crime. For e.g.: in true Glasgow fashion, my characters meet their found family here, and they all fit together like a mismatched quilt much like the city’s architecture and people.
After all, Glasgow is a gritty place but it’s also one of the friendliest in the world.
With that thought, I must say, I am so looking forward to seeing you all in Glasgow this June. I can’t promise good weather, but I am certain it will be a belter day indeed! If you want to read books set in this incredible city, drop by my table and say hello 👋.
